Couple plant hundreds of acorns to grow trees
By Kelly Thomham

THERE aren't many people who choose to tackle the world's ecological problems from their own backyard. But Cathy and David Sergeant have decided our planet is too precious to sit around doing nothing. The couple are planting trees to replace all those cut down to make way for new developments.
They have been collecting acorns all year and have potted up each one individually with soil, ready to plant. Their garden, in Breck Lea, Sowerby Bridge, is full of more than 300 potted acorns ready for distribution. Each one, once planted, should grow into an oak tree.
Mrs Sergeant, 53, said: "We have taken it upon ourselves to do this because we feel it's important. We are just a middle-aged couple trying to do our bit. "So many trees have been cut down to make way for new houses, in particular in Sowerby Bridge, and people don't realise trees are needed for oxygen and for the planet. So, we are trying to replace these trees and plant them where there aren't any trees."

Mrs Sergeant, an accountant, and Mr Sergeant, a chartered engineer, have been collecting the acorns from pavements. They have planted the acorns with rose quartz crystals, because they help the trees grow.
They are also growing some beech and horse chestnut trees. Their garden is now over-run with pots that need new homes. Mrs Sergeant said: "It is difficult finding places to plant the trees. We have given many away to friends and family, but we still have more than 300."

This is a long-term project for us. We will start collecting acorns again in the autumn.
"The couple, who have four grown-up children and three grandchildren, are appealing for people with spare land to contact them. "If anybody has a spare field or spare corner in their garden, we have trees that are ready for planting. There may even be schools that would like to plant a tree.
We are giving them away free," said Mrs Sergeant. "Yorkshire is beautiful, as is the world in general if you look in the right places. You just can't sit back and let everybody else do things. Sometimes we have to make our own contribution. "The trees are for everybody's benefit."
Anyone wants a tree from Mr and Mrs Sergeant should call them on 01422 833118.
